WEBINAR: Writing STEM Picture Books with Melissa Stewart
Picture book biographies have been popular for many years, but there’s currently an increased demand for other kinds of nonfiction in the marketplace. One great option is STEM-themed concept picture books with an expository writing style. Kids love these innovative, high-interest titles, and educators find them useful for science lessons as well as informational writing units.
Join author award-winning Melissa Stewart for a lively presentation that digs deep into the expository nonfiction writing process. After explaining the differences between narrative and expository nonfiction, Melissa will share strategies for developing an irresistible hook, selecting a text structure, experimenting with format, and identifying the best voice for a particular manuscript.
Attendees will get a sneak peek at early drafts of an upcoming book and see samples of how it changed over time based on feedback from her critique group, her editor, and, eventually, the illustrator and art director, too. There will be time for questions at various points in the presentation and at the end.
